Parvovirus (Parvo) is a highly contagious deadly virus that attacks primarily the intestines. There’s another form of Parvo that attacks the heart as well. Parvo can be transmitted by a person, animal or anything that comes in contact with an infected dog’s feces. The virus can actually live for months on things like shoes that have stepped in infected feces, on food and water bowls, even on the floors. This is just one reason why it makes my blood boil when I see dog feces littered in the streets and in parks where children play. Not cleaning up after one’s dog is not only disgusting and offensive, it can actually be dangerous if a dog happens to be infected with Parvovirus and someone steps in it’s feces, tracking the virus with them everywhere they go. A dog owner that is irresponsible enough not to clean up after their dog is probably irresponsible enough not to vaccinate their dog. Don’t let your dog sniff the feces of other dogs. Dogs contract illnesses like Parvo by sniffing, inhaling the virus through their nostrils.
Symptoms of
parvo include vomiting, bloody and/or very foul smelling diarrhea, lethargy, loss
of appetite and weight loss. There is
some treatment available to address the symptoms of Parvo, but there is no way
to kill the virus itself. There is no “cure”
for Parvo. Treatment would be very
expensive and lengthy, and an awful thing for your puppy to endure. Parvovirus in dogs should not be confused
with the human Parvovirus B19 illness, they are not the same thing. We don’t get
Parvovirus B19 from dogs, and they don’t get Parvovirus from us. See the web site www.Mayoclinic.org to learn more about the
human Parvovirus B19.

Fantastic post and talking about Parvo is so important as unfortunately so many puppies die from it, I had a puppy like 30 years ago that died from it when it was still becoming known and before the vaccines, so I am so aware of it and the consequences if your pup is not vaccinated.
You are so right that parvo is dangerous and pet parents need to take responsibility for their dogs. I'm with you with getting irritated with dog parents leaving their pups poop everywhere. It's messy and very dangerous. We actually have a couple of dogs who often run loose in our neighborhood. They tend to poop on our property. Unfortunately, Henry sniffed the poop a few times before I noticed it. The vet tested him and he's fine. Thankgoodness! I also find coyote poop on the property regularly, which I can also transmit parvo. Henry's always attracted to it. As dog parents it means our pups need to be vaccinated and we have to keep our eyes on our dogs. But gosh, they can be quick and sniff things within a blink of an eye.
Great post and I'm sharing with all my dog parents.
This is such an important post. Thanks for sharing the impact of Parvo and how it can spread. As a cat owner, I heard of Parvo in the past but never had an issue. Thanks for sharing your informative post. I never realized how easily this sickness can spread. Cleaning up after one's dog's is more than just courteous, it really is life-saving!
A timely reminder. so many people do not realise that it's not just warm weather that appears in Spring. I hate people whose pups dump them just walk away - socially irresponsible, I think so.
Be a responsible dog owner, clear up, keep your pup up to date on shots and be safe!

Such an important topic, Cathy. I have heard of way too many cases of Parvo and just can't believe it when I hear people do not want to vax against it. And I just recently stepped out of my car in front of a lovely gallery and had to walk me and my grandchildren around so many landmines! People, pick up your dog's poop! Really. Other responsible pet parents come by with their dogs who go to poop like a magnet and who knows what they will get. Parvo is an awful disease for those pups who have to deal with it. Shared this as it is so important.
