STOOL SOFTENERS SAFE FOR DOGS

My dog Phoebe was having some trouble doing her business, specifically pooping.  She seemed to be straining and having some pain while doing it.  Afterwards she was licking the area excessively and scooting on the rug, so off to the Veterinarian we went!

Stool Softeners that are safe for your dog

Our Veterinarian examined her and didn't see any internal issues, thankfully.  He gave me a cream to apply twice daily.  The cream worked only temporarily so back to the Vet we went.  This time he gave her a Kenalog injection, which had the same corticosteroid ingredients as the cream but a lot stronger.  In addition, he discussed adding a stool softener for her and provided a few options.

I try to stay away from medications and look for more natural substances when feasible, so I opted to try those first.  Here is a list of food products that can aid as a stool softener or laxative for your dog:

> Canned pumpkin or squash (no sugar or salt added): 1 - 2 tbsp. with food 1 - 2 times a day

> Bran: 1 - 2 tbsp. with food 1 - 2 times a day

> Milk: 1/2 cup twice a day

> Vegetable/Olive/Mineral Oil 1/2 - 1 tsp with food 1 - 2 times a day

I started with milk for Phoebe and it worked really well!  I could have also tried the pumpkin because my dogs love the taste of pumpkin, but I was afraid Icy would try to eat Phoebe's pumpkin and then we might have a bit of a mess on our hands, if you know what I mean!

I feel much better now Mama!

Medications that can also be safely used as laxatives or stool softeners for dogs include:

> Metamucil: 1tsp with food 1 - 2 times a day

> Dulcolax: 5-20mg daily

> Milk of Magnesium: 1 - 2 tbsp. with food 1 - 2 times a day

Always consult your Veterinarian before giving your dog any of these.  Every pet is an individual and your Vet knows your pet best.  I always consult our Vet before giving my dogs anything for medicinal purposes.

I hope you found this information helpful.  Happy Pooping!!

Bentley is a spinner and we are working on the allergy aspect. The boys love pumpkin so they get that in their food often. I'm glad it helped Phoebe ❤️

Food allergies are definitely a possibility. I'm hoping Phoebe just needs a bit of laxative for a short period of time. The other thing my doctor mentioned was a higher fiber diet for her. We'll see how she does. Thanks for stopping by today!

Carmine has IBD and used to get constipated every couple of weeks. I feed him a little pumpkin mixed into his canned food dinner every day now, and he has been doing a lot better! :)

We had some constipation issues with Charlie when we first switched to a raw food diet... but we use pumpkin now as a natural stool softener - it's great for hair balls too!

So glad Phoebe is feeling better! I prefer all natural treatments too. We haven't had this issue yet, but this is great info in case we need it in the future.
