Grab your pooch and take a trip with us to a hidden gem of Long Island, Montauk Point!
DOG FRIENDLY MONTAUK, LONG ISLAND NY
Montauk is at the Eastern end of Long Island, and I mean the very end. You'll see t-shirts, bumper stickers, and other items sporting the phrase "MONTAUK. THE END" because Montauk Point marks the very end of Long Island. Step off Montauk Point and you're in the open Atlantic ocean, miles away from land.
One of the main attractions on Montauk Point is the 200 year old historic Lighthouse. For a fee, visitors can go up to the top of the lighthouse and look out over the Atlantic ocean and all of Montauk.
As you travel East to Montauk, you'll pass through the posh area known as The Hamptons. If you're interested in this "playground to the rich and famous" check out my blog post 100 Places To See With Your Dog: The Hamptons, New York.
Summer fun on Long Island is all about the beach! Sunbathing, surfing, jetskiing, boating, or hiking the sand dunes and bluffs are a favorite past time of Long Islanders. Having grown up on Long Island, I can attest to the fact that Long Islanders love their beaches and waterways!
Sadly, there are few beaches around "The Island" that allow dogs. Montauk, however, has at least two great beaches that are open to dogs all year round, at any time of the day! Unlike the beaches of Montauk's next door neighbor The Hamptons, where stringent rules restrict dogs' access to beaches.

CAMP HERO STATE PARK , Montauk Long Island, NY
Camp Hero was a military base until it was given to New York's Office of Parks, Recreation, and historic Preservation in the 1980's. It was even used as a cannon practice site during the Revolutionary War! No we didn't find any cannonballs - other than those in nearby pools - LOL! Camp Hero lies along the beautiful Montauk coastline and is dog friendly! We had a great time romping in the ocean, taking in the beauty of the coastline and the bluffs.
My dog frolicking in the waves on a beach in Montauk |
In the photo below, you can see the historic Montauk Lighthouse in the distance. We had to hike down a steep narrow trail to get from the bluffs down to the beach, but is was so worth it!
My dog on the beach near Montauk Lighthouse |
The steep bluffs at Camp Hero are eroding and can be dangerous if you get too close. We enjoyed their beauty from a safe distance.

MONTAUK POINT STATE PARK & HISTORIC LIGHTHOUSE
Montauk Point State Park is the very Eastern tip of Montauk, just down the road from Camp Hero State Park. The Lighthouse at Montauk Point is the big tourist attraction out there. Camp Hero is free IF you've already paid the $8 parking fee at Montauk Point State Park, so keep your receipt!
Dogs aren't allowed at the Lighthouse, but they're allowed on the beach! |
During the American Revolution, Montauk Point was the scene of many marine disasters. After the revolution, the newly formed American Government wanted to stimulate trade with other nations. In order to do that, they needed to make the waters off Montauk Point a less treacherous area for sea vessels and create safer passage to key ports in New York and Baltimore.
In 1796 the Montauk Lighthouse, the first lighthouse built in New York state, was born out of this necessity. It's the 4th oldest active lighthouse in America, still safely guiding mariners through the thick fog that often blankets the ocean off the coast of Eastern Long Island. It's a huge source of pride for native Long Islanders!
My dog Icy exploring the shores of Montauk State Park |
The beach at Montauk Point State Park has a lot more seaweed and large rocks than Camp Hero's beach, but it's still fun!
I'm telling you, I see a MERMAID out there! I'll bet she helps guide the boats to safety in the fog by singing to the Sailors! |
Look Ma, a crabby! Can we have him for dinner? Oh wait, no, looks like someone already ate him. |
GOSMAN'S DOCK, Montauk, Long Island, NY
Gosman's Dock is a waterfront area in Montauk that started out in the 1940's as a small chowder stand. It has grown into a popular little entertainment area with several shops, an ice cream stand, a clam bar, and a few waterfront restaurant's including the main eatery, Gosman's Dock restaurant. Most of the restaurants aren't dog friendly on outdoor patios, but the one in this photo allows dogs on this casual outdoor "clam bar patio".

After a super fun and exhausting day in Montauk, we head West and drive back home. Of course, we're starved after all that fun in the sun so we stop at one of the many dog friendly restaurants along the way!

OMD! I love lighthouses and that one is fabulous! What a beautiful place to visit. It must have been such fun growing up near a beach. ☺
Looks like some fabulous places! I'd love to visit.
All those places look lovely!
Those are some beautiful places!
I've always loved the look of light houses on the coast. There's something just so beautiful about them.
WOW!!!! So amazing!!!! You have been to the most beautiful places!!!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
SlimDoggy's dad is from Dix Hills, LI so we love the beaches out there! Looks like a fun time.
I love them too! The Montauk Lighthouse has such a wonderful history, it really was a very important lighthouse in terms of trading back in the late 1700's. Thanks for stopping by M.K.!
It really is a beautiful place, with some nice dog friendly beaches - a rarity on Long Island! Thanks for stopping by!
So lovely! And dog friendly! Thanks for stopping by!
These are two lovely beaches, we had such a nice time! Thanks for stopping by!
Oh, me too! The crashing waves along the beach, the open ocean beyond, and the steep bluffs - I love that!
Thanks Jenna! We really have been lucky these last few years to be able to travel cross country with our dogs. Such beautiful memories! Thanks for stopping by Jenna!
Oh Wow!! You're from Dix Hills? We have a home right next door in Huntington! My brother in law grew up in Dix Hills. We love the beaches out here too, so lovely! Not many are dog friendly but I've been scouring the Island to find the ones that are! Thanks for stopping by!
Wow - sure looks like an awesomely pet friendly place! Love all of your photos!
Montauk Point looks like such a cool place to take your four legged munchkins! I also love lighthouses -- and it looks like your back in NY, how is it!? What a great blue sky beach day you all had for this trip. Loved these pics!
That looks like a lovely place to go visit with a lot to do. We're lucky to have a ton of dog-friendly beaches here!
So gorgeous! I've never been to the East coast its a place i'd love to visit!
I love old lighthouses. It's too bad Montauk doesn't have more dog friendly beaches though Camp Hero State Parks looks beautiful. I so wish we lived near the ocean. We are off Lake Michigan, but it just isn't the same. Ruby's not a big fan of the beach - she's more of a woodsy dog.
I think it's great you can find such amazing places to visit with your dogs.
What a fun trip! Thanks for documenting. It is great to know other places that are good to bring the pups!
Fantastic! Love all the pics! My family is out on the Island, so wonderful suggestions to keep in mind! Pinning & Sharing!
I LOVE your pictures!! It's so cool to see doggy day out pictures. Well done!
My friend lives on Long Island and we are going to visit her in 2 weeks. I am going to see if we can go here. Love it!
What a lovely place to visit! One of my friends goes to Long Island to visit family, I'll have to tell her about Montauk having a dog friendly beach. Did Phoebe go too?
What a great place to visit. I love the beach and the ocean (my Aussie heritage). We have nice beaches and lakes but not quite the same. That Italian restaurant sounds fabulous too.
We haven't made it to Montauk yet. It looks beautiful, we will have to make a point of doing so!
Looks like a beautiful place would love to see it someday, and glad there is at least one pet friendly outdoor patio. Love Dolly
What a fun trip! Love the scenery - it's beautiful! I've never been anywhere in NY other than NYC. I have to admit I didn't even know The Hamptons were in NY! lol. Glad that you all enjoyed a fun trip and found several dog-friendly activities!
Thanks, I'm glad you like my photos! It is quite dog friendly, especially for Long Island which isn't the most dog friendly place overall.
I love lighthouses too, they're so cool especially the historic ones! Yeah, we're back in NY. Happy to be back but I'll miss AZ so very much. Long Island does have incredible beaches though, no beaches in Arizona, LOL!
You are so lucky to have great dog friendly beaches in California! We have so few here on Long Island, but this one in Montauk is great.
It's really beautiful out on the East End as we call Eastern Long Island. I hope you can come visit some time Kerri!
I love old lighthouses too, the more historic the better! There were two dog friendly beaches in Montauk which was great. They're much more dog friendly than some other areas of Long Island. My dogs love both the woods & the beach!
Not always easy to find, but when I do find a great dog friendly destination I love to share!
It was super fun! I love finding great dog friendly destinations & sharing our adventures.
Thanks, glad you like my photos! I didn't know you had family out here, if you come to visit please let me know I'd love to meet in person! Thank you for sharing this, much appreciated!
Thanks, I'm so glad you like the photos! It's so beautiful out in Montauk you almost can't take a bad shot!
Oh, it's so beautiful you will love it and so will Dexter! I hope you make it to Montauk.
It is so lovely! Definitely let your friend know that Camp Hero and the lighthouse beach are dog friendly, not everyone knows about that. Phoebe didn't come along this time, she stayed with Auntie Janice who loves her to pieces!
It's a wonderful little beach town, I love it. The Tuscan House is The Best! I still cannot believe they are so dog friendly on their patio, it's such a nice restaurant.
Oh, it's so lovely out there. I love being in Montauk and just enjoying looking out on the open ocean, seeing the boats come in at the marina. It's great, especially since it's dog friendly!
Yes, we were lucky to find a great dog friendly restaurant, The Tuscan House. We just love it there, even when we don't have the dogs with us!
That is so funny, I'm sure many people don't know where The Hamptons are. Eastern Long Island is such a beautiful place, but it gets Super crowded during the height of Summer.
Your photos are absolutely fantastic. Any pup would be over-the-moon to take a trip like this!! Love love love!!!
What a lovely place to visit. And how exciting to see a mermaid! Oregon's beaches pretty much all allow dogs so we're always surprised when other places limit access.
Such a beautiful spot! Love that lighthouse in the background...
Wow Long Island looks amazing! Especially the beach! I can just imagine my two fluffies running around having fun there! I think I might head to beach tomorrow - thanks for the inspiration ;)

I am such a big lighthouse fan, they have such magic even though they are practical things.
Woew - this is a coll place I love that they are THE END. We have Cape Reinga here its the very top of NZ and nothing is beyond it!!
What a wonderful adventure! Your lighthouse images are beautiful and they give me such a feel for the beauty of your surroundings. And a pet-friendly restaurant that LOVES dogs? What a happy ending to your day! Thank you for sharing!
What a fun trip! I've been out to the north fork for a winery tour but never to Montauk before. I've always wanted to go out there. Looks beautiful. Sure seems like everyone had an amazing time.
Looks like an amazing trip! I have always wanted to go there but it is just far flung enough away that I doubt I'll get there any time soon. So pretty though!!
Would you believe I have never been to Montauk? I've been wanting to see the Lighthouse for years! These photos make me want to go even more. I'm glad Icy and Phoebe had a great time.
All of these places are parts of New York I have never seen! I have been to NYC twice - both times on business. Then I have been once to visit my husband's family. That was in a very small town in upstate New York. I would love to go again one day and see places like this!
I love how pet friendly these places are!
How nice to have a place where you can visit with your dogs. I love light houses
I LOVE all the beaches and the lighthouse! ❤ Ahh, I wish we lived closer to the beach! Great post
Sometimes it's hard to believe that there are such remote areas on Long Island since it's so close to NYC. I would love to visit there actually 2 dog friendly beaches is pretty good! The US Open (tennis) is at the end of the month it's on by bucket list to go some year. You don't by any chance like tennis do you?
Wow! This looks so beautiful and I'm sure Icy had an amazing time in the ocean! How wonderful there are still a few dog friendly places on the east coast.
WOW! Look at all those beautiful beaches! My favorite thing about traveling with dogs is finding dog-friendly restaurants. Some of them even have dog specific menus these days! I love it!
Your pictures are beautiful, looks like you had a wonderful day. It's a shame there are so many dog un-friendly places, but a restaurant that was actually excited to see a dog? That was a bonus!
Oh my doG, there are MERMAIDS? Ha! I always love reading your adventures and seeing the pictures. Bravo-Pup would for sure want to go find that mermaid, too. *s*
Everyone looks from the photographs that they had an amazing time and it is so great that you can go on holiday and take your dogs knowing that there are dog friendly places, it makes life so much easier for everyone.
Oh wow! Camp Hero looks amazing! I love that the beach is dog friendly too. So many of them by us aren't, at least not during season. The pics are gorgeous.
We have never been to Montauk, New York but now I want to visit as I can bring Bella with me and she will have fun visiting all those places
It looks so lovely there and glad to hear that there were a couple of dog friendly beaches to enjoy and somewhere to eat too! Love the lighthouse too!
Beautiful pictures!! Sounds like a great day out.
Would you believe I've never been to Montauk?!? This only makes me want to go even more. I'm glad you and the pups had a great day.
Oh this looks total heaven to me! Your pictures are so much fun, thank you and if you need someone to carry your bags next time - I'm here :-)
Wow, a hundred places? Jasmine would have appreciated that. Cookie is quite content in one spot as long as there are frogs or other small critters to play with.
I lived in NYC for years and never made it to Montauk or the Hamptons. Now that I've moved from New York, I have to leave these destinations for my bucket list. These are great places to visit with or without a dog. Classic destination must visit places with beautiful sights to see.
So glad you are able to find dog friendly locations near where you travel. Unfortunately I believe some beaches are off limits to dogs because of irresponsible owners. My nail salon is beside a dog groomer and you wouldn’t believe the number of people who don’t clean up after their dogs outside the store.
Lovely beach. I like exploring light houses with Mr. N but he hasn't actually been in one yet. Some day!
Is it sad that I know this place from the television show 'The Affair', and The Hamptons from 'SATC'?! I enjoyed reading your tourist information and learning about the area's history. It's always nice to learn about dog-friendly places. We can pack our own vegan picnic so not too worried about patios.
Thanks Hindy I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It's always a great time in Montauk with the dogs and we love the Tuscan House, they are so wonderful to the dogs!
I'm so glad you enjoy reading about our adventures with Icy & Phoebe! Icy would be happy to share her favorite mermaid spots LOL!
I love traveling with my dogs, I actually hate to leave them! We always have a great time out in Montauk.
Thanks for the compliment on our photos, these are some of my favorites. Camp Hero is a really interesting place with so much history, and the bluffs are gorgeous - I hope they don't disappear with all the storms we have!
I'm sure Bella would have a ball out there! It's a long drive out to The End of Long Island but it's so worth it.
We love that there are 2 dog friendly beaches in Montauk and a couple of dining patios the dogs are welcome to enjoy between Montauk and The Hamptons.
Thanks Holly! It really was a great time.
I can't believe you've never been to Montauk! You must go, it's incredible out there - we love it.
LOL!! We can always use help with all the treat bags we pack for Icy & Phoebe! I'm glad you think our photos are fun, we enjoyed sharing them with you.
At Least 100 Places, LOL! By now we've probably taken the dogs to a thousand places! Icy and Phoebe love discovering new places, it's so much fun exploring with them.
I can't believe you never made it out to The Hamptons or Montauk when you lived in NYC, it's just a long LIRR train ride away! It's super crowded out there in Summer but after Labor Day it's much easier to get around.
You're so right, irresponsible dog owners are everywhere and they ruin it for all dogs. That is the main reason communities don't want to give access to dogs! Why don't people get that??
I love the Montauk lighthouse, it's so special! Dogs aren't allowed inside but they can enjoy the beach that surrounds it.
LOL!! Not sad at all, I totally understand that. The Hamptons is so infamous, it's been featured in many shows & movies. Masquerade was one of my favorites, with Rob Lowe and Meg Tilly. Love that movie!
