DOG SAFETY AT THE BEACH

On a warm and sunny Summer day, what's more fun than a day at the beach with your dog?

Beach Safety tips for pets
A beautiful day at the Montauk Lighthouse beach, but Watch Out! there could be dangerous breakers ahead!

Dogs love to frolic along the seashore with their faithful humans at their side.  Along with all the exciting stuff to discover along the shore are dangers to watch out for so keep dog safety at the beach in mind.

During a beautiful romp along the dog friendly beach at the Montauk Lighthouse, we discovered one such shoreline danger.

Keep your pets safe at the beach
My husband and my dog found a dangerous stray length of fishing line with a two pronged hook and weight attached

DOG SAFETY AT THE BEACH

 FISHING HOOKS!!

As my husband and my Husky, Icy, romped along the shore we discovered this length of fishing line.  Attached to the fishing line was a two pronged fish hook and a weight. YIKES!!  If Icy had spotted it first, it might have been tragic.

Stray fishing line & hooks are a danger to pets at the beach
This two pronged fishing hook had a wad of kelp stuck to it

In many beach communities, boating and fishing are favorite pastimes.  Fishermen often have to cut their fishing lines when they get snagged on something.  If they don't retrieve those cut lines and hooks, they frequently end up getting washed up on the shore.  This creates a danger to both people and pets.

Imagine a fish hook getting lodged in your dog's mouth - OUCH!!

FISHING LINE!

Many birds and other critters that frequent the shores often get tangled in discarded fishing line.  On one popular fishing pier in Florida, Pelicans are actually dying in substantial numbers due to becoming entangled in fishing line.

Dogs could get tangled in fishing line at the beach as well. What if your dog was swimming in the water and became entangled in a large swath of fishing line? He could potentially drown!

Or if your dog swallowed a small wad of fishing line. That could potentially become a hazard to his intestines. Fishing line is strong and twisty. Your dog may not be able to poop it out.

If your dog encounters any of these mishaps, your wonderful beach day could end up with an emergency Vet visit.

Ne
xt time you take your dog out for a fun day at the beach, be wary of stray hooks and fishing lines!

Yikes! Fish hooks scare me! So glad your boy didn't pick it up in his mouth! Thanks for the reminder (we have ponds nearby, so we have to watch for hooks on the pond banks). Beautiful beach!

I live in an area with lots of lakes, ponds, and pets. One of the things I am always on the look out for is a stray fishhook. Those things cause big boo-boos even on humans. Manna doesn't walk along the water, but I worry about other people's pets and wild animals when I see dangerous things laying about.

Yowch, glad you spotted it first! I always wish Matilda weren't afraid of water so she could have more fun at the beach, but the hazards sometimes don't seem worth going near the water. Always fun to dig in the sand, though I worry about trash on land, too.

YIKES! That is a scary find! Glad your husband found it before it could injure anyone. Safety is always important...even at the beach.

We've never taken the boys to a beach but would like to someday. These are great tips to keep in mind!

I know, right?! I was so shocked the first time I saw that thing on the beach. So nasty. Good point to also remember to be cautious around pond banks, thanks for pointing that out!

I'm glad you're aware of them and are always on the lookout for those nasty fishhooks! They definitely can cause big boo boos on people too. My brother once cast his rod inside the house and the hook got caught on my hand! I will never forget that, it was so awful!

I'm so glad my husband found the hook before she pawed or grabbed it in her mouth! We have to be aware of potential hazards along the beach, & everywhere else too. You just never know.

Eek! We've never run into one of those although a fisherman threatened to kick Mr. N once!

yikes! fishing hooks always scare me when we go down to the lake and river. Good thing you found that be fore your pup did.

Oh that is super scary! Mine don't ever go close to water, but for those that do - YIKES!

Wow! I never thought about fish hooks on the beach. And most people walk bare footed!

Great reminder! I'm so glad you spotted that and removed it so some other dog didn't suffer any consequences. It would be pretty hard to spot fish hooks in the sand and surf, even if you remember to watch out for them. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled next time I take my Sadie to the beach.

Great advice! We only go to the dog beach but that doesn't mean we should assume it's safe! Love Dolly

This was a really great read! My parents have recently moved to the beach and invited me to come down with Gracie and Echo. They have never been to the beach, so it's good to know what I need to watch out for!

I love the beach, but now I'm more careful.

Important to be mindful of it!

Gasp!! A fisherman threatened to kick sweet Mr N!? How dare he! I hope you told him off! How horrible.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

They scare me too. I once got a hook stuck in my palm when my brother was playing around with his fishing rod in the house. It was super painful!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

It is scary! They can get in seaweed & you wouldn't see them!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

I know right!? Ugh.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

You really do need to be careful. If you see fishing line, there's probably a hook nearby!

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

True! Never assume. Fishing line & hooks could wash up anywhere.

Thanks Katie, glad you enjoyed it. How fun, first time at the Beach for them! You'll have to do one of your awesome videos when you do.

That's scary. I thought you were going to say jellyfish.

That's scary. I thought you were going to say jellyfish.

Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them said...

Oh definitely jellyfish too! They are awful if they stink your dog's paw. Thanks for that reminder!

Tail Wag Wisdom said...

WOW!!! I wouldn't have thought about fish hooks or fishing lines on a beach. Those are major warnings signs look out for when at the beach. The last time I was at the beach there were pieces of jellyfish on the sand and little crabs the seagulls were going after in the moist sand. It was low tide. Now, I have more items on my look out list for my beach visit with Henry. Excellent information! I'm sharing with my dog parents!

Eeep fishing hooks on a beach that sounds scary. Who on earth would be so reckless as to throw away a fishing hook in sand. It could do so much harm! I will get twitchy on the beach now!!!
