Summer is upon us, and with warm weather and sunny skies, many owners
are choosing to take their dogs out to sea on their boats. Many four-legged companions enjoy sailing as much (heck, maybe even
more than) their human counterparts. The feeling of the wind in your fur and the
smell of salt air is enough to make dogs giddy with a sense of adventure!
However, there are safety considerations to keep in mind
before bringing your dog on board. The folks at K9 of Mine created a Dog Safety Tips
Infographic that they've shared with Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them to help keep canine
companions safe while out on the water.
Be sure to read these tips before you take your pet out on the water!
PIN THIS!
Phoebe came along on a sunset cruise aboard a large boat, but Icy still hasn't foung her sea legs! Neither of them has been on a canoe, kayak, or raft, but this season will be different!
Icy's maiden voyage aboard a boat is planned for later this year! I'm both excited and a bit anxious about it. I will let you know how it goes in a future post. I'll be sure to follow all the safety tips on K9 of Mine's Info-Graphic before we go!
Icy and Phoebe have been mostly Land Lubbers, but hopefully we can change that soon! |
A big THANK YOU to K9 of Mine for sharing this Pet Safety Ingo-Graphic and tips to keep pets safe on the water!
🐶 I'll be careful to use a Life Vest for dogs before I bring my dogs on any boat, you should too! As the Infographic shows, it's an important safety tool. I just got Icy a beautiful new life jacket from Outward Hound - Isn't it pretty! They offer a great discount for first time orders on their site, which was a big help.
Have you taken your pet out on the water? Please leave us a comment and tell us about it, you know we love hearing from you!

The boys have never been in a boat but we hope to get them on the water this summer! Great infographic ❤️
Many years ago when we used to camp, my hubby had a fishing boat. Our dogs at the time absolutely loved going out in the boat! We had to train our Lab mix Maggie to stay in the boat until we stopped and told her it was OK to swim. I really miss those days!
PS...Having your dog fall out of the boat is NOT a good way to learn that they can indeed swim. We weren't very smart back then at times (and got life jackets for them after that).

I love this Info-Graphic, I think it's a great pet safety sheet!
That must have been so great! I'm dying to get Icy & Phoebe out on a boat this Summer. Life jackets are a must for sure.
We have not taken Ruby out on a boat yet. We are still trying to get her used to walking on the beach or near water.
Our former dog, Pip, loved the water and boat rides. He was a Yorkie and we had a little life jacket for him.
The more I hear about Pip the more amazing I can see he was. I'm sure Ruby will get there, taking it slow is the smartest thing you can do.
I just Pinned this to my dog board. Considering it's summer, this is timely info!
I'm so glad you found it Pin-worthy! I definitely think it's so timely. I see a lot of people with dogs on boats, sitting out on the front of the boat with no life jacket and no one close to the dog. It always frightens me.
My dogs have been in a canoe and they enjoyed it! These are great tips for boat safety.
Thanks for the reminder to buy new dog life jackets! I remember checking last year and most of our dogs seemed to have outgrown what we have.
Neither of my dogs have ever been on a boat before, although I've been thinking of getting either a canoe or a kayak and I'd for sure want to try bringing them with me. I got them both life jackets a few summers ago that we just use when we take them swimming, so I'd for sure make them wear those. Thanks for all the tips!
I have only ever seen cats in canoes! Kitty Cat Go cats and Bailey the Boat cta (who has since returned to become a landlubber). Without fail they wore lifejackets, and could swim.
People NEED to read this stuff. I can't imagine going out without a lifejacket, Safety FIRST, LAST and ALWAYS!!!!
Good luck with the boat trips. I had a friend who moved to a house on the lake and her two dogs loved the boat rides. they had their life vests on at all times.
I hope your boat trip goes well, and your dogs get to enjoy it with you!
My smallest dog goes kayaking with us (life jacket used). We haven't had a chance to try our other two on boats yet. Hoping when we do, they all enjoy it!
What great advice! I think Pierre would love boating. Now, we just need a boat!
Great tips to keep your dog safe on a boat! My childhood dog always wore a life vest when we went boating. He didn't like the water, but he also didn't like to be left behind. So, at that time my parents got him a very small child's life vest and it worked perfectly.
I love seeing Phoebe again! Such a sweetie! Hugs to Icy and Jessie!
I would love to take Treeno on a boat, I think he’d like it. Maybe a ferry ride is more his speed at his advanced age.
Great post, I wouldn't have thought to teach new commands, or to bring doggy sunscreen. I've been thinking about bringing Matilda on a kayak for the first time this summer and now I feel a bit more prepared!
That's a wonderful graphic! This is such an important post especially this time of year when boating is such a popular past time. When we had our boat, our Harley was the only one of our Huskies who even wanted to go. We had a life jacket for her, but sadly, like Icy, she had snow legs not sea legs and spent the whole time on our lap or lying on the floor! The happiest she was happened when we docked! So, no boating for our Sibes! But, there are folks who dogs absolutely love being out on the water, so this is such important info! Great article, Cathy!
