In addition to these essential dog supplies, you should have a flashlight in case the power goes out. You should have some cash with you as well. When there's a power outage merchants often revert to cash only business. Gas, food and lodging along your evacuation route may require cash.
During the 2003 blackout in New York City, it was really disconcerting to be unexpectedly stranded in the city and unable to use a credit card for anything until power was restored! It was quite scary.

ADVANCE EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS PLANNING
🟆 Never leave your dog at home if you are evacuating! Plan to take her with you. If it's not safe for you to stay in your home, it's certainly not safe for your dog to stay there. Don't assume that "someone" will find your dog and take care of her. Odds are they won't. She'll be left alone and frightened, trying to fend for herself. You can't be sure when you'll return.
🟆 Search now for public shelters (school, stadium, etc.) in your area and hotels that accept pets, or have a plan of where else you will go with your dogs such as a family or friend's house outside your own city or state.
🟆 If you think a mandatory evacuation order is coming leave your home Early, don't wait. Restrictions may increase as an evacuation process progresses. You may also get shut out of pet friendly shelters and lodging options. Please don't wait until the last minute!

Shared via Twitter. I especially learned the cash thing the hard way. Way back when, we got hit hard by hurricane Sandy and went over a week without power. No one could take credit and we hadn't thought ahead to keep out any cash. That was stressful! I keep an emergency kit in the trunk of my car, for both us humans and all our pets. I do what you do and once in awhile go through my kit and replace anything that's close to expiring.
It is so so so important to be prepared, the minute I moved to San Francisco it was one of the first things I did, prepare a bag with everyone for Layla plus me, I check it once a year and it is easy access. Great reminder

We do have an emergency go bag, but we really do have to take a look at it and replace some items. Thank you for the reminder that it is that time of year again! We don't have a lot of natural disasters up here in Michigan, but it is good to be prepared just in case.
